Elementary Core Reading Program
HMH Into Reading
The HMH Into Reading program is a comprehensive literacy curriculum for K-6 that aims to build strong foundational reading and language arts skills. Developed by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, it combines research-based strategies with engaging, age-appropriate content to support students in developing reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and critical thinking skills. The program uses a blend of whole-class instruction, small-group activities, and individualized learning, allowing teachers to differentiate based on student needs. HMH Into Reading also integrates assessment tools to monitor progress and offers extensive online resources for interactive and at-home learning, supporting both teachers and students with resources to build a lifelong love for reading and literacy.
UFLI
The UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Reading Program is an evidence-based literacy initiative focused on teaching foundational reading skills, particularly effective for early elementary students and struggling readers. UFLI offers structured, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through its programs, such as UFLI Foundations and UFLI Virtual Teaching Hub. Developed by literacy experts at the University of Florida, it uses a multi-sensory approach that includes engaging, research-backed activities to build decoding skills and reading fluency. The program’s explicit, sequential methods are especially beneficial for students needing targeted intervention, and it provides teachers with structured lesson plans and assessments to track progress and adapt instruction to meet diverse literacy needs.
Benchmark Assessments
NWEA, or the Northwest Evaluation Association, provides benchmark assessments that measure students' academic progress and growth in core subjects like reading, math, and language usage. These assessments, often administered through their MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing system, adapt to each student's ability level, providing educators with personalized insights into individual strengths and areas for improvement. Designed to be taken multiple times throughout the school year, NWEA benchmark assessments allow teachers to track growth over time, compare performance against national norms, and guide instruction based on data-driven insights, helping schools align educational outcomes with grade-level expectations and long-term academic goals. For additional information, please visit the NWEA's website.
